KUALA LUMPUR: THE Kijang Emas Scholarship Award may not be a household name, but for those who have received it, it reflects a prestige they want to live up to.
The five recipients for this year are Turga Ganapathy (SMK Convent, Teluk Intan), Kwong Kien Yi (SMK Clifford, Kuala Lipis), Wadah Shafiqah Mohammad Fadil (Sekolah Tun Fatimah, Johor Baru), Adnan Zikri Jaafar (SM Agama Persekutuan Labu) and Pavithran Maniam (SMK Damansara Utama).
Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz presented the Bank Negara Malaysia Scholarship Award 2012/2013 at a ceremony attended by family members of the five students.
Turga, who scored 9A+, intends to study environmental engineering while Kwong (10A+) wants to pursue chemical engineering and Wardah Shafiqah (9A+ and 1A), geophysics.
Adnan Zikri (11A+) is keen on doing Arabic and Islamic Studies at Oxford University while Pavithran (10A+) has set his eyes on doing medicine.
Since it was introduced in 2005, there have been 34 recipients of the scholarship, which is part of the bank's commitment to nurturing young talent for the nation.
No bond is imposed on the recipients and they are free to pursue their choice of field of study in any university abroad.
Zeti reminded the students of their responsibility to serve the nation once they graduated
